If you are limited for space and financial resources to pursue your machining hobby, you may want to consider a combination mill drill machine. They are space-saving, versatile, inexpensive, and suitable for light machining where affordability is a factor. There are also 3-in-1 machines available that combine the mill, the drill and the lathe. Although these machines have limitations, you can turn out satisfactory work if you do not try to force the work or try to do a job requiring a large industrial machine.
If you buy one of the lower priced import mill drill machines, think of it as an assembled kit. There will be adjustments that you’ll have to make and other details. This should not be a problem. After all it’s a hobby. Right?
When you buy your mill/drill it is common for the for the head to have poor alignment with the table. It may be necessary to loosen the bolts that hold the column to the base and add shims as needed to correct the alignment.
It is helpful to have a power feed. Instead of buying a new mill drill machine that already has a power feed, it would not be too difficult to build one if you have a little knowledge of how machinery works. Building a mill drill machine power feed would give you some great experience to be used in other projects.
Depending on your circumstances and the type of work you plan on doing, you may want to might want to check on the of the different types of columns used on these mill drill machines. The most common is a round column but there are also square columns and dovetail columns. Also these machines are available with belt drives or geared heads.

Some tips for safe operation of your mill drill machine:
- Use the right tool for the job.
- Avoid operation in wet work areas.
- Make sure that the machine is properly grounded.
- Never leave a machine when it is running.
- Do not try to stop the spindle with your hands.
- Work at the speed which the machine was designed for.
- Secure the workpiece with clamps or a vise.
- Never hold the workpiece in your hand while drilling or milling.
- Do not try to reverse the spindle rotation while the machine is in motion.
- Replace cracked, chipped or dull tools immediately.
- Wear adequate eye protection.
- Do not attempt to handle hot and sharp chips with bare hands.
Although compromises in size, features, rigidity, and precision are made in order to remain affordable, Mill drill machines serve their designed purpose quite well, and are capable of satisfactory accuracy given enough time and skill.
